Dear Sir

NEWLYN & DISTRICT WATER SUPPLY

On Monday, 19 March 2001, over 40 people from Allendale, Broomfield, Kingston, Newlyn, Smeaton, Springmount and surrounding districts attended a public meeting at Newlyn to voice their concerns about the poor quality of their reticulated water supply.

Since Central Highlands Water changed over the Newlyn and district water supply from the Newlyn Reservoir to the Forest Hill bore, people have experienced many problems caused by the high salt content and hardness of the water. Some of these problems are:

  • Extensive corrosion of pipes, hot water services, irons, heating elements in jugs and kettles and commercial appliances such as dishwashers, urns, steamers, and cappuccino making machines.
  • Dripping taps caused by corrosion and/or sediment buildup of tap washers.
  • Build-up of salt and/or calcium around taps and inlet & outlet pipes and shower walls.
  • Skin problems resulting from washing, showering & bathing.
  • Soaps & detergents don’t lather effectively.
  • White film on cutlery, crockery, glassware and cars.

The public meeting decided to establish theNewlyn Reservoir Action Group and appointed a committee to raise these matters with you and to seek:

  • A return to the Newlyn Reservoir as the source for the Newlyn & district water supply with adequate filtration.
  • Compensation for those people who have suffered financial loss and/or health problems resulting from the effects of the bore water.

It would be appreciated if you will meet with members of our committee to discuss these matters.
